The Totem is all about family. It is our connection with the past. It is the karma we bring into this life. It is about genetic influences. Yesterday, I heard that we are all 99.9% the same. That's pretty close to saying we are all one. Genetic connection is being studied world wide.
Does the connection with family help or hurt. It can do either or both.

The whip is about discipline. Will today take great mental effort if there may be emotional unhappiness or possibly physical difficulties?
What tests us, makes us stronger. We struggle to attain and in so there is a karmic strengthening of character.

Family issues today, maybe spiritually related, possibly karmic. There are some things from the past that may be hanging we need to take care of, possibly including family issues.
